Finely executed original botanical study of a purple bearded iris shown from the flowers to the crest of the rhizome and roots. The fine craftsmanship is evident in the realistic representation of the flower as well as the droplets of water on the petals and leaves.
Carlos von Riefel was an Austrian botanical painter, and his striking pictures of fruit and flowers remain popular poster subjects today. In pre-World War II Vienna, he was a member of the Professional Association of Austrian Art Educators. Riefel's illustrations were published in such books as The Rhododendron (Sussex: 1958-1962), A Folio of Fruit (London: 1957) and Flowers and Blooms from Mountain Country and Heath (Vienna: 1955).
