Detailed wall map of Puget Sound region in Washington State. Key for “References” shows symbols for principal cities, county and international boundaries, numerous railways, sounding in fathoms of harbors, U.S. military naval and light house reserves. Raised topography shows various mountain ranges such as Mount Rainier, Mount Constance, and Mount Baker. Scale of 6 miles: 1 inch.

The map is imprinted in large stencil letters “Compliments of the Fairhaven Land Co., Fairhaven, Washington.” The radial distance from Fairhaven is marked in increments of 10 miles. The purpose of the map is indicated by its subtitle, “A Valuable Compendium of Useful Information and Complete Railway and Navigation Guide for Travellers and Settlers.”

The map was made just 10 years after the Northern Pacific Railroad was completed coast to coast, and four years before Washington joined the Union as the 42nd state. It was common in the late 19th century for land promotions to be issued as maps to promote settlement, development and tourism. Fairhaven was founded in the late 1880s and by the 1890s was a busy port. It is now a part of Bellingham.
