A commemorative pictorial print incorporating views and pictures of Illinois history in an elaborate large decorative border around a central map of Illinois in 1834. This was published to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Northern Trust Company in 1934 and according to its cartouche is “[a] direct reproduction of a map of Illinois published in 1834 [with] panels portray[ing] important events and developments of the period.”

The borders, illustrated by William Mark Young, feature 12 historical views including Pere Marquette landing in the Illinois country in 1673, Chicago’s first public school building in 1844, the first railroad in Illinois in 1838, La Salle Street in 1889, and La Salle Street in 1934. The cartouche in the upper portion is flanked by portraits of a Black Hawk Native American, and Shadrach Bond—the first governor of Illinois. The cartouche in the lower portion is above a portrait of Lincoln.

The 1834 Mitchell map (as reproduced in the center) shows counties colored in shades of green, orange, yellow, and pink with major roads, towns, canals, and rivers, tables of population and steam boat routes. It is titled: “The Tourist’s Pocket Map/ of the/ State of Illinois/ Exhibiting its/ Internal Improvements/ Roads Distances &c./ by/ J. H. Young/ Philadelphia:/ Published by/ S Augustus Mitchell/ 1834.”
