The terrestrial globe surmounted by metal hour disc, in full meridian calibrated on each side (made of iron, with copper finish on the edge and on the raised calibrated lines and numbers), the meridian adjustable within semi-circular holder, all within circular Costello horizon band (incorporating months, zodiac, time, in concentric calibrated circles in faded tones of pink, green, yellow, blue, and orange), raised on a tripod copper-finished iron stand with foliate decorated tapered stem, cabochon decoration between the cabriole legs, ending in paw feet.
The globe gores were probably made by W. & A.K. Johnston, England, assembled on the globe and stand by Weber Costello, Chicago, for sale by a Northwest School Furn. Co., a school supply house. Isothermal lines in red and blue, ocean currents in white and blue. Green oceans, and colored land masses in green and off-white. Figure 8 analemma.
For more information on the Chicago school of globe makers, see our Guide to Globemakers.
The horizon band is circular, based on the design of Thomas Costello, and bears the legend in the January section "COPYRIGHT, 1898 BY T.H. COSTELLO."
