Solar and lunar eclipses, and the succession of seasons, are among the astronomical principles demonstrated on the Universal Planetarium. This geared scientific instrument is comprised of a four-inch tin terrestrial globe by J. Chein within semi-spherical blue plastic hood (to show eclipses), and having a spherical painted representation of the moon (revolving around the earth), all turning at the end of an metal arm, and a central yellow plastic sphere representing the sun raised on a black plastic stand with graduated round support and round base with printed zodiac calendar.
This device serves its original educational purpose by providing a working model for students to visualize the earth in the solar system, and is also decorative and entertaining. The gearing is very simple, causing the earth to shift directions to show the seasons, but not causing the earth to spin. The hood, earth, and moon are intended to be turned or spun by hand.
