Rare set of five relief physical planetary and lunar globes, each freely rotating on a simple maple cradle stand composed of two crossed-rectangular slats, dished to hold the globe. Each globe is on a scale of approximately 1:32,000,000 (1 mm ~ 32 km, 1 inch ~ 500 mi). Most of the globes bear a small explanatory rectangular printed label.
These globes were made in a limited edition by Replogle Globes, Inc. of Chicago for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Planetary Geology Programs, Office of Space Science. For more information on Reploggle and the other Chicago globe makers, see our Guide to Globe Makers.
Label on Earth Globe Base: "Globe navigation charts (Defense Mapping Agency, Aerospace Center) were used to compile land areas. Seafloor portrayal was based primarily on 'Topography of the Ocean,' a map prepared by T.E. Chase and others, and published by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, 1975. Reference was also made to the [sic.] 'The Physical World,' by the National Geographic Society, 1975, U.S. Geological Survey Professional Papers, American Association of Petroleum Geologists Memoirs, and written communications from members of the Branch of Marine Geology, U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California. Cartography by the U.S. Geological Survey."
