Natural history study of a pair of goldfinches perched on twigs against a white background.
Richard A. Mueller was an American artist in Eastern Wisconsin, working almost exclusively in colored pencil. He favored colorful natural history subjects such as birds, flowers, plants and animals, which he rendered in a finely detailed realist style by building the forms in layers of color against a white background. Mueller was born in Plymouth, Wisconsin. He worked for local newspapers in Wisconsin. He started drawing in colored pencil in 1970, while living in Neenah and working for the News Record. In 1988, he opened his own art gallery in Door County, a peninsula in Lake Michigan near Green Bay. He remained in Door County for the rest of his life.
