Finely executed old master drawing comprised of classical figures surrounding a banner left blank, most likely for lettering as a cartouche design for a title page, frontispiece, or a map. Drawing mounted in French mat and gold leaf frame. The allegorical figures are drawn from different cultural sources, and represent a nation or region and its abundance, wealth, military power and enlightenment. A seated woman and a winged Gabriel with trumpet hold a cloth banner, left blank for the imprinting of the cartouche text. A royal couple with shield surmount the banner, and in the lower portion, a female figure bearing a crown and scepter leans on an urn. Other figures are borrowed from Roman mythology: on the left, a satyr with grapes and wine cup and woman with cornucopia represent abundance, as do a river god and cherub flanking the female royal figure. To the left is the Roman goddess Minerva in legionnaire's attire, and a nude Venus holding pearls, representing war and peace.
