This aerial view of the Financial District of New York City in lower Manhattan shows the passenger ship S.S. Manhattan arriving in the harbor. The photograph is mounted on its original mat with promotional information for United States Lines, the owner and operator of the ship.

United States Lines began operations in 1921, as successor to another shipping company. In August 1932, United States Lines launched the Manhattan, its first ship constructed expressly for passenger use. Her sister ship, the Washington, was entered into service in May 1933.
