Golfer Henry Callender, one of the pioneers of golf in England, is depicted in the Field Marshall's uniform of the Blackheath Society of Golfers. This style of uniform is still worn by the present holder of the post on formal occasions. It is thought that the term Field Marshall was used at Royal Blackheath before the military use in the British army. The two golf clubs illustrated are still in the collection of Royal Blackheath Golf Club.

This example is a 1916 version of the original 1812 mezzotint by William Ward after Abbott, of which approximately only 50 are presumed produced.

On chine applique and wove paper, signed in pencil, proof before title, published by Vicars Brothers, London, 1916 with their address and copyright engraved above the image, the embossed stamp of the Fine Art Trade Guild below the image. In oak frame with gold fillet.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual light wear, soiling, soft creases. Uniformly toned overall, colors attractively mellowed and muted.
