Portrait of John Haighton, M.D. (1755-1823) surrounded by items related to his profession as physician and teacher: a specimen under glass, a skull, a book, paper and a quill pen and ink bottle. In his day, Haighton was a prominent expert on what would now be called obstetrics, a member of the Medical Society of London who lectured at the Royal College of Surgeons, which has his lectures on midwifery in their collection. He also wrote medical books, including a syllabus of his lectures on midwifery delivered at Guy's Hospital, published by Cox in 1811.
