Large set of richly detailed natural history prints of land and river mollusk shells. They combine precise scientific observation with aesthetically pleasing compositions showcasing the natural colors, textures, and shapes of the specimens.
The shells were illustrated as part of a French government expedition lead by Castelnau between 1843 and 1847, further described by the subtitle: "New or Rare Animals Recorded During the Expedition into the Central Parts of South America, from Rio de Janeiro to Lima, and from Lima to Para." This expedition was sponsored by the French government. Castelnau was awarded a medal from the Société de Géographie.
Condition: Each generally very good with the usual overall light toning and wear. Some with occasional light spotting. Most are finished with gum arabic to simulate the sheen of actual shells.
