Pair of floral subjects in outdoor settings with bright colors and vivid lighting. In one, the trumpet-shaped blossoms of lavender morning glories are set against a tangle of foliage. In the other, the heavy blooms of pink roses frame a sunlit field beyond, down a hill. The pictures interestingly combine a strong sense of sculptural form of the flowers with an almost baroque sense of motion in the compositions. Initialed lower left: "EM."
Edouard Muller was a 19th-century painter known by the alias "Rosenmuller" ("Rose" Muller), presumably because he specialized in rose paintings. His painting Botanical Harmony remains a favorite poster subject today.
Condition: Generally very good with little to no toning. The colors vivid and the edges having the usual scattered light wear including small tears. |
