A serene, late 19th century view of a body of water surrounded by palm trees in soft, hazy light that suggests mist rising in the early morning. Skillfully painted en grisaille in tones of black, white, and grey, the work is cleverly composed, playing the straight lines of the palm trunks and their reflections off the gracefully curving shapes of the palm fronds. Condition: Generally very good with the usual light overall toning and wear. Few abrasions neatly restored. Minor toning to outer edges, barely noticeable. Minor tape residue verso from former mounting. Slight diagonal horizontal crease, barely noticeable. Margins trimmed to image, except for one remaining margin tab upper center. |
