Indonesian Views – A Pair of Watercolors
Jakarta: c. 1940s
Signed lower right and lower left respectively
Watercolor on paper
10.5 x 13.75 inches, overall
$750, the pair

Pair of picturesque watercolors of Indonesian landscapes, apparently by local Indonesian artists. One, by Kandi, depicts farmers tending to a field of grain with a mountain range in the background as well as a few palm trees appearing in the field. The other, by Soewardja, shows a fertile farming valley at the base of a mountain range with a cluster of houses at the edge of a placid river.

The original seller's labels read: “Perusahaan ‘SEDERHANA'/ DJ. Taman Kebon Sirih ( Kebon Sirih Park ) 44/ DJAKARTA/ Membingkai (Inlijsten),/ Mendjilid (Boekbinden) / Dan Reklame./ Dir. Pemilik/ Mh. Nawawi Rohibi,” apparently a printing, binding and framing business in what is now known as Jakarta.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual light overall toning. Faint mat burn along the borders, easily matted out. Painting by Kandi with some minor abrasions and losses to paint, some inpainted.
