Nocturnal landscape of ancient Mediterranean ruins illuminated by golden moonlight emanating from the horizon. A few small figures can be seen strolling down a path in the lower right as a river to the left flows through the arches of a bridge. An assortment of plants with many vines assimilate themselves into the ruins. This work falls into the category of a capriccio, a type of inventive landscape painting that reflects the caprice of the painter in placing particular works of architecture in an unusual setting. Earthy and metallic olive gold tones are dominant and the artist has skillfully evoked the subtle effects of moonlight.

Condition: Generally good, with craqueleure overall, some minor flaking of paint. The frame faded, with some loss of finish, scattered minor lifting and chipping of veneer.
