These architectural studies of facades of great English country houses are from Vitruvius Britannicus, named after the great Roman architect Vitruvius. The primary focus of this very influential three-volume set of books is neo-Palladian English architecture of the early 18th Century inspired by the work of the renowned Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, "who has exceeded all that were gone before him." The books included Palladian-revival designs of the 17th century by Inigo Jones, the accomplished English architect credited with introducing Palladianism to England, and the work of Sir John Vanbrugh, possibly the most innovative English architect ever, whose creative classical-revival architecture retained a Baroque flair. Also included were the designs of contemporary architects, including the author, Colin Campbell, a Scottish architect who through these volumes became one of the initiators of the Neo-Palladian movement, influencing the course of architecture in England.
