Printed typescript mimeograph Israeli-Syrian General Armistice Agreement, United Nations, dated July 1949, in English and French, including appendices (annexes).  This is the personal copy in a custom binding owned by Colonel Robert Churley, USMC (1916-2008).  A folding map, issued as part of Annex I, accompanying the text, is loosely inserted in a pocket in the inside rear cover.

The contour map was compiled from surveys made in 1941 to 1943 and has detailed geographical information and numerical markings, since it was intended for military use.  Colored coded lines mark the demilitarized zone, the Syrian-Israeli armistice demarcation line, the defensive area, and the Israel and Syrian truce lines.  The key to these lines is printed within Lake Tiberias in the lower third of the map.  Map text in French and English.

The Israeli-Syrian Armistice Agreement was the result of talks begun in April 1949, as a result of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49.  Israel demanded that Syria evacuate their forces from areas they had been occupying during the war, and Syria agreed, as long as certain areas were demilitarized.  Israel accepted these conditions and the agreement was signed on July 20, 1949.  Ralph Bunche, an American diplomat and acting United Nations mediator on Palestine, acted as the mediator on this and other armistice agreements between the fledgling State of Israel and the Arab nations in 1949, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in 1950.
