The terrestrial globe is surmounted by an arrow pointer and printed hour circle, within a calibrated full brass meridian and circular horizon band with engraved paper calendar and zodiac.  The globe is raised on a tripod bronzed iron stand, with decorative foliate cabriole legs, ending in scrolled feet.  Oceans are cream color.  Geographic entities are cream, blue, green, pink and yellow, some with red outlining.

The Atlantic Cable between Britain and the U.S. is shown as “Submarine Telegraph Cable," as well as the subsequent “Submarine Telegraph French” between the U.S. and France, which was completed in 1879.  North and South Dakota are shown prior to statehood (1891) as the single region “Dacota,” and Oklahoma as Indian Territory. Historical data is printed on the oceans.

Franklin Globes were produced by a succession of different companies during the second half of the 19th century.  For more information see our Guide to Globe Makers.
