12-Inch Handmade Celestial Globe
American: c. 1950s to 1960s
15 inches high
$1,300

Handmade celestial globe model, the stars represented by raised colored pinheads or painted dots, with applied cloth zodiac and paper equatorial bands, and decoupage star cluster constellation and nebulae images cut from printed material, all against a midnight-blue painted sky.  The globe rests loosely in a metal circular base.

This unique globe was apparently made by or for someone with a love of astronomy.  The design and color choices are reminiscent of the early period of the Space Race during the late 1950s to early 1960s, and it was probably created at that time.  The maker took a manufactured terrestrial globe, painted it, and applied map pins, paper and cloth bands, and printed astronomy images.

Condition:  Globe generally very good with usual light overall toning, wear, and soiling.  Some chipping and losses to applied constellation and nebulae images. Stand with usual wear -- vintage, but associated.
