Grouping of six botanical watercolors (five of palm trees and one of a rubber tree), painted in Germany by an anonymous artist in the spring of 1813. Each is inscribed in elegant calligraphy with the name of the plant in German and sometimes is accompanied by its Latin name as well. The plants are delineated with great sensitivity and accuracy against plain backgrounds with a small patch of ground, and some include large details of the fruit.
They were originally bound as a collection of over 150 watercolors in an album with a title page. The text on that page notes that the plants were selected with "particular consideration for commercial, industrial, medical and natural science." They were created during the heyday of the collector's cabinet and are very much in the spirit of the Enlightenment, by illustrating a diversity of natural history oddities, albeit useful plants, in both a scientific and decorative manner.
