A rare mid-19th-century panoramic bird's-eye view of New York City issued by a German publisher. The view is centered on the tip of Manhattan and includes the opposite shoreline in Brooklyn. The Hudson and East Rivers bustle with a variety of sailing vessels and steamships, with more docked at piers around the island. Pedestrians and horse-drawn carts walk along Broadway and the promenade along the shore. Numerous buildings and landmarks in lower Manhattan are shown in detail, notably the Battery, Castle Garden (the round building off the Battery), Trinity Church and City Hall. Everything north of Chambers Street fades into the distance. Much of present-day Brooklyn is rural. The cluster of buildings north of the bend in the East River is probably Williamsburg. This view was made prior to the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, which was begun in 1870.
Verlag von Carl Martin Senior was a German publisher, at Alexandrinenstraße 100, Berlin. The firm also published a view of the German city of Cologne around 1850, as well as sporting prints. The offered view of New York is apparently scarce; we were unable to locate any other examples.
