Colvert and Robert Wirth were Prussian-born engravers who were working in New York City as early as 1860. The firm Wirths Bros. & Owen also produced Christmas cards.<\/p>\n

The progenitor of the style was the great French botanical artist Pierre Redout\u00e9, whose Choix<\/strong> series, published at the end of his career, included bouquets of some of the specimens rather than the more typical scientific study of a single plant.
