{"id":7941,"date":"2017-02-15T21:10:32","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T02:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/?post_type=product&#038;p=7941"},"modified":"2021-06-30T02:43:18","modified_gmt":"2021-06-30T06:43:18","slug":"botanical-art-prevost-flowers-in-basket-still-life-antique-print-paris-early-19th-century","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/product\/botanical-art-prevost-flowers-in-basket-still-life-antique-print-paris-early-19th-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Botanical, Art, Prevost, Flowers in Basket Still Life, Antique Print, Paris Early 19th Century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jean-Louis Pr\u00e9vost was a painter of landscapes and flowers; and frequently worked in watercolor.\u00a0 Born in Nointel, France, he was a student of Bachelier and a member of a circle of painters associated with the great botanical artist Gerrit van Spaendonck.\u00a0 He was a member of the Academy of Saint-Luc, exhibiting paintings of flowers and fruits there from 1791 to 1810, and he also exhibited at the Academie Royale.\u00a0 His works are in the collection of a number of French museums.\u00a0 His best known work is the <strong>Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits<\/strong>.\u00a0 A series of <strong>Cahiers de Fleurs dessine\u00e9s d\u2019apr\u00e9s Nature<\/strong> after Pr\u00e9vost and engraved by A. Legrand was issued in the first quarter of the 19th Century.\u00a0 Prints based on paintings by Pr\u00e9vost were separately issued as well, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, some bound in composite sets of prints by various makers.<\/p>\n<p>An original Pr\u00e9vost botanical watercolor, and three Pr\u00e9vost botanical prints are in the collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and are illustrated and described in a book of the collection.\u00a0 According to authors Brindle and White, Pr\u00e9vost&#8217;s still life images (specifically flowers and fruit in baskets in the Hunt collection) &#8220;reflect a characteristically French trend away from Baroque extravagance and toward casual informality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall toning and scattered wear. Those prints are engraved by A. Legrand and A.P. Teillard respectively.
