Born in Washington State, by 1927 he was drawing newspaper cartoons for the <strong>Portland (Oregon) Telegram.<\/strong> From 1934 to 1937 he worked for the <strong>New York Mirror. <\/strong>Meanwhile he was freelancing for magazines and books. He started drawing syndicated comic strips and comic books in 1940, starting with <strong>The Shadow<\/strong>, and later drew <strong>Polly and Her Pals, <\/strong>and <strong>Bringing Up Father<\/strong>. An active member of the National Cartoonists Society, he served as vice president for two years. In 1964, he was awarded their Silver T-Square Award.
