According to the inscription, the song was performed by Mr. Smith to “unbounded applause” in the Rival Patriots at Sadler’s Wells, a London theater that has been a place of entertainment since Dick Sadler opened a “musick house” there in the 1680s. In the early 19th Century, Sadler’s Wells was known for pantomime, light opera and variety acts, largely because London’s three Royal Theatres had a legally enforced monopoly on “regular drama.” The illustration apparently depicts the performer singing the song while gesturing toward a scene of the drunken protagonist passed out at a table in a tavern.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":5841,"template":"","meta":{"wds_primary_product_brand":0,"wds_primary_product_cat":0,"footnotes":""},"product_brand":[],"product_cat":[956],"product_tag":[42,3622,5868,4928,1512,2435,1610,2288,5869,2736,2735,1673,2737,2140,2656,2289],"class_list":{"0":"post-5840","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-genre-humor","7":"product_tag-19th-century","8":"product_tag-copperplate","9":"product_tag-drunken","10":"product_tag-drunkenness","11":"product_tag-engraving","12":"product_tag-genre","13":"product_tag-humor","14":"product_tag-laurie","15":"product_tag-lyrics","16":"product_tag-oatland","17":"product_tag-oatlands","18":"product_tag-print","19":"product_tag-ramble","20":"product_tag-satire","21":"product_tag-song","22":"product_tag-whittle","23":"post","24":"post-with-thumbnail","25":"post-with-thumbnail-large","27":"first","28":"instock","29":"purchasable","30":"product-type-simple"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product\/5840","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/product"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product\/5840\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":16945,"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product\/5840\/revisions\/16945"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/5841"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5840"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"product_brand","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_brand?post=5840"},{"taxonomy":"product_cat","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_cat?post=5840"},{"taxonomy":"product_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_tag?post=5840"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
