He admired the French artist Rene Vincent, so became known at his firm as Rene Clarke, even though he was born as James Alfred Clarke.\u00a0 He vacationed in Florida in his later years of life painting a number of landscapes there.<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion of his exhibition at the Society of Illustrators in 1956, an article about him was published in the magazine <strong>American Artist<\/strong>, subtitled &#8220;An appreciation of an artist who, for more than forty years had a profound effect on advertising art and, over the same of years, has also practised [sic] independent painting in watercolor.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rene Clarke\u00a0 (1886 &#8211; 1969)<br \/>\n<strong>Field<\/strong><br \/>\nAmerican: July 6, 1924<br \/>\nWatercolor and ink on paper<br \/>\nSigned lower left: RC July 6 24<br \/>\nNotes verso: &#8220;Rene Clark, A99.18&#8221;<br \/>\n14 x 20 inches<br \/>\nProvenance: Society of Illustrators, New York City<\/p>\n<p>A shimmering landscape done in pastel shades of yellow, purple, blue, and green. The scene depicts a farming field, along with surrounding vegetation, and the suggestion of two homes in the distance.
