Rene Clarke worked as an illustrator for the advertising firm of Caulkins and Holden for 44 years starting in 1912.\u00a0 Hee became Art Director and then President there. He admired the French artist Rene Vincent, so became known at his firm as Rene Clarke, even though he was born as James Alfred Clarke.\u00a0 He vacationed in Florida in his later years of life painting a number of landscapes there.<\/p>\n
On the occasion of his exhibition at the Society of Illustrators in 1956, an article about him was published in the magazine American Artist<\/strong>, subtitled “An appreciation of an artist who, for more than forty years had a profound effect on advertising art and, over the same of years, has also practised [sic] independent painting in watercolor.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Rene Clarke\u00a0 (1886 – 1969) A shimmering landscape done in pastel shades of yellow, purple, blue, and green.
