{"id":5015,"date":"2017-02-10T18:47:52","date_gmt":"2017-02-10T23:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/?post_type=product&#038;p=5015"},"modified":"2018-10-10T18:06:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T22:06:47","slug":"decorative-arts-studies-sevres-soft-porcelain-garnier-chromolithographs-19th-century","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/product\/decorative-arts-studies-sevres-soft-porcelain-garnier-chromolithographs-19th-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Design Art, Decorative Arts, Sevres Soft Porcelain, Garnier, Antique Prints, 1892"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The complete set of 50 plates, representing 250 watercolors categorized by period, type and style of original S\u00e8vres pieces, was originally issued over a year-long period in ten installments,.\u00a0 It was a reference work for decorative arts designers and collectors, making it one of the earliest scholarly works on 18th Century antiques.\u00a0 The examples of S\u00e8vres in the prints are attractively arranged in brilliant colors either as singles, pairs or groups, making the chromolithographs fine works of art in their own right.\u00a0 The set\u2019s value as a reference and decorative work is still recognized today; it was reprinted as a book in 1988 by Studio House, London.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e8vres, a French national porcelain producer, had its beginnings in a ceramic company founded in Vincennes in 1738; it was moved to S\u00e8vres, France (for which it was named) in 1756, with Louis XV as one of its major investors.\u00a0 Up until the 1780s the company had an official monopoly on the manufacture of painted and gilded porcelain.\u00a0\u00a0 Constant improvements in technology were made, with hard-paste porcelain production beginning in 1768, and permanently replacing soft-paste in 1804.\u00a0 In addition to Louis XV and Louis XVI, aristocratic patrons of the company included Madame du Barry and Catherine the Great of Russia.\u00a0 The ceramics produced included fine figurines, large elaborate vases, and plaques incorporated as decorative panels on furniture.\u00a0 In the early 19th century the factory was nationalized and produced a great deal of porcelain for the personal use of Napoleon.\u00a0 The company continued to operate through the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>Condition: Generally very good with the usual light overall toning, handling, soft creases, wear.<\/p>\n<p>Reference:<\/p>\n<p>Pope-Hennessy, John.\u00a0 <em>The Encyclopedia of Antiques.<\/em> rev. ed.\u00a0 New York: Greenwich House, 1982.\u00a0 pp. 307-308.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edouard Garnier (editor)<br \/>\n<strong>Studies of S\u00e8vres Soft Porcelain<\/strong><br \/>\nfrom <strong><em>The Soft Porcelain of S\u00e8vres, With an Historical Introduction<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nJohn C.
