She graduated Hudson High School in 1900 and, as a young woman, studied art and taught piano and the organ. In 1904, Dooley visited her brother in Puerto Rico. She fell in love with the island, and shortly thereafter moved there with her husband. Their artistic and governmental careers flourished on the island. In 1933 she was appointed U.S. District Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In her free time, she also painted landscapes and seascapes of the region. Her paintings and etchings were published on postcards and exhibited in New York. K. Dooley, an American artist who immersed herself in the cartography, culture, and history of Cuba, as well as of Puerto Rico. The map is richly illustrated with historical events, maritime activity, and cultural elements showcasing Cuba’s heritage and industries such as tobacco and sugar. The decorative border is adorned with vignettes of wildlife, flora, fauna, and cultural symbols that embody Cuban life. The lower border displays national flags and provincial coats of arms. Additionally, the musical notation on the lower right labeled Hymno De Bayamo is the Cuban national anthem. Apparently a rare map, we located just one other example of it. As with other mid-20th-century pictorial maps of this period of the islands of the West Indies, this example was likely created to promote tourism.

Product description continues below.

[4175,556,6783,6775
61,7060,9958,3660,9980,9981,538,529,5336,7548
0":"post-42998","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-beach-house","7":"product_cat-pictorial-maps","8":"product_cat-tropical-decor","9":"product_cat-west-indies-caribbean-mexico-maps-views","10":"product_tag-20th-century","11":"product_tag-antique-map","12":"product_tag-caribbean-sea","13":"product_tag-cuba","14":"product_tag-cuba-faithful","15":"product_tag-eliza-dooley","16":"product_tag-map","17":"product_tag-pictorial","18":"product_tag-pictorial-map","19":"product_tag-west-indies","20":"post","21":"post-with-thumbnail","22":"post-with-thumbnail-large","24":"first","25":"instock","26":"purchasable","27":"product-type-simple
["GET
