Intertwined with the history of its larger neighbor, Kansas City, Missouri, life in Kansas City, Kansas was shaped by local ideological clashes in the Civil War era and the explosion of American transport and industry in the second half of the 19th century. Both cities suffered from rough, violent beginnings. As a border city wedged between Missouri, a slave state since 1821, and the proposed free state of Kansas, modern-day Kansas City, Kansas was a notable site of clashes between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions, referred to as \u201cBleeding Kansas,\u201d between 1854 and 1859. Missouri was claimed by both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War, but Kansas \u2013 which became a slavery free state in 1861 — was firmly controlled by Union forces throughout the war.<\/p>\n
In the aftermath of the conflict, the region benefited from the post-war railroad boom, with Kansas City\u2019s strategic location along the Missouri River and its proximity to newly constructed railroads tapping the location as a major site for industrial growth. The gavel features a hexagonal mallet head with incised geometric decorative embellishments and an inscription reading \u201cPresented to \/ Federation of Clubs \/ Kan. City. Kan. \/ A.D. 1897.\u201d Although no specific information has been located about the Kansas City Federation of Clubs, it may be assumed that this was an association of fraternal organizations popular in the region at that time. Indeed, one such association known as the Fraternal Aid Association was founded October 14, 1890, in Lawrence, Kansas, which is in the same vicinity as Kansas City, Kansas.
