A fine brass and iron Spencer microscope of typical form. The Spencer Lens Company was founded in 1895 in Buffalo, New York by Herbert R. Spencer (1849-1900). The company was the continuation of the business started originally by his father, Charles A. Spencer (1813-1881), who was one of the first major American producers of fine microscopes of the 19th Century.\u00a0 In 1935, The Spencer Lens Company was bought by the American Optical Company. For several years after the acquisition, the Spencer Lens Company continued operation under its own name as a subsidiary before becoming known as the Instrument Division of American Optical Company in 1945.<\/p>\n
Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light wear and handling. Light oxidation to the metal.<\/p>\n
