In dramatic hard-sell prose, the advertisement promises the \u201cmost remarkable book of the age,\u201d and issues a \u201ccaution\u201d to \u201cbeware of Rehashed Lives of GRANT\u201d and other \u201cunscrupulous\u201d publishers claiming to offer books of a similar caliber. It further proclaims this to be the \u201cmost intensely and absorbing book of travel EVER PUBLISHED.\u201d Entries were said to be \u201cfull and graphic descriptions of [General Grant\u2019s] arrival and triumphal entry into San Fransisco \u2026 welcomed by 200,000 eager residents and 500 singers.\u201d<\/p>\n
To put this broadside in context, Americans of the 19th century most likely would never travel abroad. Thus, the book was aimed at discussing exotic places and peoples around the world and to capitalize on the popularity of Grant as a Civil War and presidential hero. The subtitle of the book details the Grants’ tour itinerary with destinations including England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Egypt, India, China, and Japan. The poster incorporates seven of the many \u201crichly and beautifully illustrated\u201d scenes from Grant\u2019s world adventures that were also in the book. These include views of the River Nile, his ship as it departed to India, and Arabian stallions presented to him by the Sultan of Turkey. The illustrations also show adventures on a wild boar hunt and unusual religious rituals and temples in Japan and India.<\/p>\n
Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear, handling. A few scattered minor discoloration areas. Folds as issued, with some greater wear at old folds and intersections.<\/p>\n

A broadside advertisement poster for the book Grant\u2019s Tour Around the World<\/b>.\u00a0 Both the book and broadside were published by H.W. Kelly in Philadelphia in 1880, documenting in text and illustrations the two-and-a-half-year world tour of President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Boggs Grant only months after finishing his second presidential term. The broadside was issued folded. As an ephemeral advertisement it is very rare today.<\/p>\n
