She began her literary career writing historical romances in verse, published while she was in her 20s. She then turned to authoring prose histories for young people. Then, with her sister\u2019s assistance, she undertook the ambitious project of producing <strong>The Lives of the Queens of England,<\/strong> which appeared over a period of several years beginning in 1840. In the meantime, she also edited the letters of Mary, Queen of Scots for publication in 1843. In addition to an abridged version of her <strong>Queens of England<\/strong> she also authored <strong>The Lives of the Queens of Scotland<\/strong> (eight volumes 1850-59), <strong>The Bachelor Kings of England<\/strong> (1861), <strong>The Lives of the Seven Bishops<\/strong> (1866) and <strong>Lives of the Last Four Stuart Princesses<\/strong> (1872).
