Two of them show the white cliffs of England’s south coast. They were painted by a 20th-century artist working in the 19th-century English taste. The ships shown prominently in the paintings fly the Red Ensign, a red flag with the Union Jack in the upper left corner that is used by British civilian vessels. The paintings are numbered 1 through 4 in pencil in the lower margin, possibly by the artist. Number 1 shows a rowboat approaching the central ship with a group of red-coated British soldiers as passengers. Sailors climb the rigging and a small sailboat sails past. A buoy floats in the foreground and white cliffs are in the background. Number 2 shows another harbor view with a large ship with three masts and billowing sails catching the light, and others in the background. Number 3 depicts a battleship with cannon ports sailing near a red and white striped lighthouse near white cliffs. Number 4 shows a sleek vessel with white sails in a harbor with warehouse buildings in the background. Each captures with subtle tones and details the colors, shapes and movement of the sea water water and clouds in the sky. The boats are accurately depicted with handsome sails illuminated by different effects of daylight.

Michael Matthews was a British painter specializing in historical maritime and harbor scenes, working in oils and watercolors. He also painted golf scenes.

Condition: Each very good with only minor toning on wear. Framed in hand-colored French mats and simple black frames.
