He turned his attention to astronomy in the early 1600s, and with his telescope discovered craters on the moon, sunspots and four moons of Jupiter. His observations of the phases of Venus demonstrated the accuracy of the Copernican model of the solar system. He published a comparison of the Copernican and Ptolemaic systems, which included the disparagement of an argument for the Ptolemaic system favored by the Pope. This caused trouble with the Catholic hierarchy, and Galileo was placed on house arrest and forced to publicly renounce his Copernican theory.

Condition: Generally very good, with the usual overall toning and wear to finish. He is leaning on a bookshelf, deep in thought as he contemplates a globe in his lap. Although untitled, the shape of the beard and prominent forehead resemble a number of well-known portraits of Galileo, including one painted in 1636 by Justus Sustermans that Galileo originally sent as a gift to a friend; it is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The offered statue also relates to the depiction of Galileo in a funerary monument installed in Santa Croce in 1737, which shows him with one hand resting on a globe. The tercentenary of Galileo’s birth was in 1864; this might have been the occasion for the production of portrait statues such as this.

Product description continues below.

[5975,4174,4227,1127,8358,1174,904,6797
1029,1494,7587,37,165,1040,1349
0":"post-20109","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-astronomy-outer-space-exploration","7":"product_cat-collectors-cabinet","8":"product_cat-corporate-gifts-decor","9":"product_cat-figurines-sculptures","10":"product_cat-globes-art","11":"product_cat-library-furnishings","12":"product_cat-portraits","13":"product_cat-prop-rentals","14":"product_tag-astronomer","15":"product_tag-astronomy","16":"product_tag-galileo","17":"product_tag-globe","18":"product_tag-portrait","19":"product_tag-sculpture","20":"product_tag-statue","21":"post","22":"post-with-thumbnail","23":"post-with-thumbnail-large","25":"first","26":"instock","27":"purchasable","28":"product-type-simple
["GET
