From frozen ponds to Madison Square Garden, ice skating has become a quintessentially New York pastime, woven into the city\u2019s urban fabric in ways large and small.<\/em><\/p>\n

New York on Ice: Skating in the City\u00a0invites visitors to explore how ice skating evolved in the city from its colonial Dutch and British origins to become a 19th<\/sup>-century craze, and later an opportunity for elaborate spectacle, commercialized leisure, and competitive sport in the 20th\u00a0<\/sup>century and beyond. Along the way, skating has left its mark on New York\u2019s urban landscape, from the design of Central Park, to intimate hotel rinks and extravagant arenas, to a plethora of skating facilities that today define and transform parks and other public spaces across the city.<\/em><\/p>\n

The story of\u00a0<\/em>New York on Ice\u00a0will be told through vintage photographs, posters, lithographs, paintings, and costumes. Together they reveal the evolution of the sport and art of ice skating in the city both as a window into a passion and pastime of generations of New Yorkers, and as an unexpected ingredient of urban place-making.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A rare 19th-century broadside advertisement from the George Glazer Gallery is part of an exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York about the history of ice skating in the city and how the pastime has “left its mark on New York\u2019s urban landscape,” including Central Park. Drawn and engraved by Edward Bookhout around 1860, the broadside advertises skates sold at Conover & Walker, a hardware and sporting goods store, with a whimsical illustration of an assortment of men, women, and children skating on top of a giant blade and the slogan “Everything in the skating line (except ponds) to suit everybody.” View the broadside on our site<\/a>.<\/p>\n
