They are part of a series of 205 copper engravings published in Germany in 1723. They each show a solitary figure against a minimal background, with title and brief description in German in the lower margin explaining the character’s attributes. Lycaon, a king of Arcadia, is depicted, as the caption explains, after having been punished by Zeus by being turned into a wolf. Minotaur, an upright bull with human face and hands, is shown in what the caption describes as the “mad garden” built by Daedalus, alluding to the labyrinth where according to Ancient Greek myth he resided until he was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus. Typhon, half man, half serpent, is described in the caption as a gigantic and powerful monster from whom the gods fled in terror to Egypt, where out of fear they transformed themselves into beasts; Typhon was finally subdued by thunderbolts thrown by Zeus, and buried beneath Mt. Etna.

Product description continues below.

[4191,947,955,6794,952
7191,2125,141,7189,7188,7190,2837,2476,1997,1859,1860,1858
0":"post-18712","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-gentlemans-man-cave","7":"product_cat-music-performing-arts","8":"product_cat-myth-allegory","9":"product_cat-oddities-curiosities-interior-decor-gifts","10":"product_cat-old-masters","11":"product_tag-beast","12":"product_tag-costume","13":"product_tag-german","14":"product_tag-greek-mythology","15":"product_tag-masquerade","16":"product_tag-messelreuter","17":"product_tag-minotaur","18":"product_tag-monster","19":"product_tag-mythology","20":"product_tag-theater","21":"product_tag-theatre","22":"product_tag-theatrical","23":"post","24":"post-with-thumbnail","25":"post-with-thumbnail-large","27":"first","28":"instock","29":"product-type-simple
["GET
