The larger silver plate on the bottom reads &#8220;Methil Bowling Club 1905. Presented by Wm. Mitchell Esq. President. Won by Robert Porteous.&#8221; The smaller plate on the top is engraved with the number &#8220;2&#8221; (either referring to the number of the ball in a set, or an award for 2nd place). Above and below the &#8220;2,&#8221; the ball itself is inscribed &#8220;R.G. Lawrie, Glasgow, Number 3 Bias, Scottish Bowling Association.&#8221; A 1906 record online at the Fife Cultural Trust lists a Robert Porteous in Methil, whose profession was bootmaker.
