The 19.5-inch telescope has a bubble level and a tripod base with adjustable feet. The box has a label certifying that it had been adjusted on December 12, 1913.<\/p>\n<p>The surveyor uses a &#8220;level rod&#8221; in conjunction with the level to read an elevation up or down from the level of the telescope. William Ford Stanley (1829-1909) was a prolific inventor with 78 patents, including many for surveying instruments.
