History of the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise, the French state theatre, published on the 200th anniversary of its founding. Handsomely printed on heavy paper and illustrated with 33 large photogravures by Goupil of “Soci\u00e9taires” (members of the troupe granted special status) from photographs in character, along with a number of smaller illustrations. Houssaye was a prominent French man of letters. Provenance: Estate of Sidney (\u201cPalmer\u201d) Edison.<\/p>\n

Description: Carl Friedrich Floegel first published his landmark study of farces and popular comic performances, such as medieval folk festivals, in 1788. In 1862, Friedrich W. Ebeling brought out an expanded edition, updated to the present, with additional text of his own. Ebeling’s revised edition had five printings. A notable feature of this book is a movable plate showing three puppets whose costumes can be changed by flipping parts of the picture.
