{"id":13952,"date":"2017-03-07T11:20:16","date_gmt":"2017-03-07T16:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/?post_type=product&#038;p=13952"},"modified":"2023-06-30T01:12:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T05:12:02","slug":"botanical-art-garden-flowers-munting-antique-prints-dutch-1696","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.georgeglazer.com\/wpmain\/product\/botanical-art-garden-flowers-munting-antique-prints-dutch-1696\/","title":{"rendered":"Botanical, Art, Garden Flowers, Munting, Antique Prints, Dutch, 1696"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Abraham Munting was a Dutch botanist and botanical artist.\u00a0 He studied medicine and botany as a young man and traveled extensively, living for a time in France.\u00a0 Returning to Holland, he joined the faculty at the University of Groningen, where he remained for 24 years as an eminent professor of botany and chemistry.\u00a0 There he directed one of the most extensive botanical gardens of the period from 1658 to 1683.\u00a0 Munting\u2019s most famous work <strong>Naauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen<\/strong> (1696), was published posthumously and is an enlarged and revised version of his previous book <strong>Waare Oeffening der Planten<\/strong> (1672, 1682). <strong>Naauwkeurige <\/strong>was later republished in a series of Latin editions beginning in 1702 under the title <strong>Phytographia Curiosa.\u00a0 <\/strong>Aside from Munting, two other artists are credited, Joseph Mulder, whose name is on plate 201, and Jan Goeree, who designed the title page art and possibly some of the landscape backgrounds in other plates.<\/p>\n<p>Pieter Van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch map publisher.\u00a0 His major work was the massive <strong>Galerie Agr\u00e9able du Monde<\/strong> (1729) a compendium of some 3,000 plates in 66 volumes, published in an edition of 100 sets.\u00a0 Other publications included <strong>Atlas Nouveau et Curieux<\/strong> and <strong>Atlas Nouvel<\/strong>, both produced in 1714.\u00a0 Van der Aa also published separately issued maps and reissued maps by earlier engravers, such as <strong>Les Forces de l\u2019Europe<\/strong> (1726), originally published in 1696 by Nicolas de Fer.<\/p>\n<p>Fran\u00e7ois Halma (1653-1722) was a Dutch publisher based in Utrecht.\u00a0 He published maps after Mercator, Sanson and others, as well as volumes on natural history and reference works such as dictionaries.<\/p>\n<p>Full title and title page text: <strong>Nauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen, Waar in de veelerley Aart en bijzondere Eigenschappen der Boomen, Heesters, Kruyden, Bloemen, Met hare Vrugten, Zaden, Wortelen en Bollen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Condition:\u00a0 Each generally very good with the usual overall light toning, wear, handling.<\/p>\n<p>References:<\/p>\n<p>Brindle, John V., James J.
