Photograph of a car-carrying ferry providing service to Orient Point, Long Island. The ferry bears the name “Orient” on its hull. Regularly scheduled ferry service between Orient and New London, Connecticut, began in the 1930s and continues today. Orient’s first colonists arrived in 1661, and the area figured in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. By 1870, it had become a resort. Today a major destination is Orient Beach State Park, established in 1929.
