Large portrait of William Hughes, Captain of the Honorable Couhany, evidently a golf society. In the 18th century, Scottish aristocrats formed such societies, which were social clubs that also held competitions. Hughes stands on the golf course, holding a golf club wearing a traditional outfit including red embroidered jacket, three-cornered hat and sash. A young caddy stands in the shadow of a tree to the left and golfers play in the distance. The print was etched by Lawrence Josset in 1962 based on the original painting by David Allan, in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

David Allan was a Scottish portrait and genre painter and illustrator. He began his art studies in Glasgow, and was able to obtain patronage from wealthy individuals to continue his studies in Italy between 1767 and 1777. There he attended an art academy and was also mentored by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter in residence in Rome. By 1780 he had set up a studio in Edinburgh, painting portraits and genre paintings of Scottish life, and producing a number of illustrated books published by the Foulis brothers throughout the 1780s.

Lawrence Josset was noted for his skillful technique in etching and intaglio printmaking. He was a prolific producer of fine prints after paintings by 18th and 19th century masters in a variety of genres including portraiture, sporting – including golf, botanicals and landscapes. One of his most important and popular works was the engraved mezzotint plate of the Annigoni portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, printed as a limited edition for The Times in London. Josset was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual light overall toning and wear and occasional minor spotting. Glue residue, and some light skinning to outer margins where formerly adhered to window mat; can be matted out when framed.
