Description
Commemorative circular bronze plaque celebrating the end of World War I (November 11, 1918). An allegorical female figure in classical garb stands atop a down-turned cannon and blows a horn, a blazing sun filling the background — evidently the emblem of the dawning of a new age of peace. The lettering of the title is part of the design. Mason also made a three-dimensional bronze sculpture of the same figure with horn and cannon, which she titled Victory (see References below).
Mary Stoddert Winfield Mason was an American sculptor born in Jackson, Tennessee. When she established herself as an artist she was living in Elmsford, New York, outside New York City. Her principal works were Pilgrim Mother, The Spirit of the New Era and Woman Triumphant.
Condition: Generally very good with the usual light overall oxidation, wear, abrasions.
