Etching of Pablo Casals (1876-1973) tuning his cello. Casals, from Catalonia, Spain, is regarded as one of the greatest cellists of the 20th Century. Casal’s signature appears as the title of the work in the matrix.
Ferdinand Schmutzer was a prolific painter, printmaker, and photographer from Vienna Austria. He came from an artistic family, including his father, grandfather, and great grandfather — the latter being Jacob Mathäus Schmutzer, who founded the Imperial Academy of Engraving. Schmutzer became Professor at the Vienna Academy in 1908 and was a member of the Vienna Secession from 1901, and President, 1914-1917. In addition to portraits he did genre and landscape and cityscape etchings.
