Cherub
Italian: c. 1900
Carved giltwood plaque
$1,800

High relief wall-hanging plaque of a winged cherub in the Renaissance or Baroque taste, posed as if in flight, looking downward with open arms. The carved wood sculptural plaque is gilded in a lustrous gold leaf.

In biblical traditions, cherubs — also known as cherubim– are angelic beings. Cherubs are the most frequently occurring heavenly creature in the Hebrew Bible. Nonetheless, the role of cherubs is never explicitly elucidated though they are often portrayed as guardians. Cherubim are regarded in traditional Christian theology as angels of the second highest order. In Western art  cherubs are associated with the putto and the Greco-Roman god Cupid (Eros), and are usually depicted as small, plump, winged boys.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall wear. Gilt finish with minor professional restorations to losses.
