Description
In addition to the inset maps, there are four illustrations of trains traveling through Colorado landscapes. At the bottom is the map title and key, with logos of eight major railroads that operated in the state at the time, and two small illustrations of trains and one of a station house. The map is printed in shades of blue, brown, black and red. As befits the map of such a mountainous region, the topography is shaded to indicate peaks and valleys. On the back are indexes to cities and towns and “features” such as mountains, rivers and national parks, and a comprehensive “List of Railroads” with explanatory information.
Linn H. Westcott was a leading expert on model trains. From 1934 on, he published numerous articles, eight books and two booklets on the subject. He also was the editor of Model Railroader magazine for 16 years. Westcott innovated several techniques for building model train layouts that are still commonly used by hobbyists today.
Kalmbach Publishing Company was founded in 1934 and publishes numerous hobbyist magazines, as well as related books. It continues to publish Trains magazine and four other periodicals related to railroading and model trains.
