Description
An inscription in the lower right of the map states that it was “compiled from original ‘Map of Chicago about 1833.'” A reduced version of this map also appeared in the Chicago Sunday Tribune Picture Section on August 13, 1933. Text accompanying that version explained that the map had been drawn by Stelzer and designed by Conley, both of Chicago, and that Conley also assisted Caroline McIlvaine with the historical compilation. The map was likely issued in connection with The Chicago World’s Fair — A Century of Progress, celebrating the centenary of Chicago in 1933. The fair was held in Burnham Park along Lake Michigan in the Near South Side neighborhood. After its successful run in 1933, it was renewed for an additional year, closing in October 1934
O.E. Stelzer published at least two historical maps of Midwestern cities in the 1930s, including A Map of Chicago Incorporated as a Town August 5 1833 (with Walter Conley, 1933) and Map of South Bend, Indiana, Showing the Settlement in 1931 (as W. & O.E. Stelzer, c. 1933)

Condition: Generally very good overall with only minor toning, wear and handling. Few short marginal tears professionally restored. Colors bright as printed with glossy finish.
