Original watercolor of three penguins, primarily in shades of blue, in a loose painterly style typic of the period. Penguins were a popular Art Deco subject. At the time Stareck painted it, he was a 31 year-old artist who had achieved some success in his native Kansas, and had moved to New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League.

Description

Edgar A. Stareck was born in Benton, Kansas, and studied at the University of Kansas at Lawrence. He exhibited at the Kansas Free Fair in 1939 and the Midwestern Artists Exhibition in 1940. He studied at the Art Students League in New York in 1948. He traveled in North Africa and Italy, making sketches and watercolors.

Original cardboard backing inscribed by artist: Edgar A. Stareck, 341 W. 23rd St., New York, N.Y.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning and wear. Mat burn from original mat, short tear in top margin professionally restored, can be rematted out. Remnants of brown paper tape top margin verso where formerly hinged. Section of original cardboard backing to original frame with artists name and address retained separately.
