Five of the 22 alphabet cards in the set and a sampling of the other 50 cards shown here.

Original whimsical manuscript pen and ink drawings on 72 cards, together with title and introduction card, featuring personified penguins engaged in various pursuits, accompanied by witty verse. 22 of the cards represent letters of the alphabet. The letters X, Y, and Z appear on the same card with the verse, “X Y and Z are much too hard for treatment by your humble bard. I leave the problem of those letters for solving by my lyric betters.” The cards for letters D and Q are lacking. One of the cards refers negatively to Hitler, indicating the cards were made before or during World War II.

Condition: Generally very good with little to no wear and light scattered soiling, as usual. Glue and adhesion residue verso where formerly mounted in an album. Apparently incomplete.
